October/November 2005—Market Insider

SECURING FOR THE WINTER
Are you sitting down? The holidays are nearing and the critical months of November and December can account for as much as 50% of the total annual sale for galleries that carry your work!

The National Retail Federation cites that total holiday sales are expected to grow by 5% over last year, a DROP from 2004’s growth of 6.7%. NRF’s Chief Economist stated that combination of many factors, including "energy prices, the job market, disposable income, and consumer confidence," are affecting sales.

Don’t despair. A retail analyst from Ernst & Young feels, "Higher gas prices could boost Internet sales, while luxury sales should continue to show strength." Re-think your holiday plans and develop an ACTION plan by...

1) Finding your weakest link. Turn weaknesses around or eliminate them. These could be a person or pieces of equipment.

2) Streamling your systems – paperwork, production, marketing, etc.
Limit your risk. Cut back on credit extensions and courtesy orders. Trouble-shoot for lax pre-qualification methods with new accounts and stay firm with returning accounts.

3) Taking your banker to lunch. Find out how to earn interest on money sitting in your checking account. Lower your credit card processing fees. Consolidate any debt (credit cards may be burning a whole through profits).

4) Taking your suppliers out to lunch. Give them the ‘heads-up’ about your slowdown - they might help extend payments, offer volume discounts, etc.

5) Rethinking your overhead. Re-examine rates on insurance, telephone long distance, credit cards.

Above all... don’t panic or take it personally. This is what you have been preparing for when building to each new plateau of success – how you would weather the tough times. Keep the horizon in view and keep your goals in check.
