2002
NICHE Award Finalists Announced
November 10, 2001
(Baltimore, MD) - Finalists for
the 2002 NICHE Awards have been announced by NICHE magazine,
the exclusive trade publication for retailers of American craft.
More than 900 entries were received; up to four finalists were selected
in each of the 37 categories. Winners will be announced at a ceremony
on February 17 at the Buyers Market of American Craft in Philadelphia.
The NICHE Awards program recognizes the outstanding creative achievements
of American craft artists who produce work for craft galleries and
retail stores.
Judging criteria are based on three main distinctions:
- technical mastery and creativity, both in surface design and
form
- market viability
- a distinct quality of unique and original thought
Jurors
for the awards included: Sandra Blain, director, Arrowmont School;
Gretchen Keyworth, director of cultural promotions for the city
of Boston; Sherry Masters, manager of the Grovewood Gallery; Nancy
Markoe, owner, Nancy Markoe Fine American Crafts; Tommy McPherson,
executive director, Craftsmen Farms; Bill McWilliams, owner, Annapolis
Pottery; Walter Hyleck, director of the Ceramic Apprenticeship Program
and Morris B. Belknap, Jr., Professor of Fine Arts at Berea College.
Finalists are invited to display their work in the NICHE Awards
exhibit at the February Buyers Market of American Craft, February
15-18, 2002, and are included in the Winter 2002 issue of NICHE
magazine.
